Most Italian football watchers remember the 2002 World Cup against South Korea for the refereeing performance of Byron Moreno, some still feel anger over Ahn Jung-Hwan’s goal and subsequent ‘sacking’ by Perugia owner Luciano Gauci while others recall Francesco Totti’s red card for diving or Christian Vieri’s wasteful finishing and utterly useless right foot. A select few remember it as the day one of the countries best ever full-backs was created, partly through necessity, part inspiration and ultimately blind luck.
Blessed is the man who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed. (Alexander Pope)
